A Comparison of Mobile VR Display Running on an Ordinary Smartphone With Standard PC Display for P300-BCI Stimulus Presentation

A brain-computer interface (BCI) based on electroencephalography (EEG) is a promising technology for enhancing virtual reality (VR) applications-in particular, gaming. We focus the so-called P300-BCI, stable and accurate BCI paradigm relying recognition of positive event-related potential (ERP) occurring in EEG about 300 ms post-stimulation. implemented basic version such displayed an ordinary affordable smartphone-based head-mounted VR device: that is, mobile passive system (with no electronic components beyond smartphone). The phone performed stimuli presentation, synchronization (tagging) feedback display. compared ERPs accuracy device with traditional running personal computer (PC). also evaluated impact subjective factors accuracy. study was within-subjects, 21 participants one session each modality. No significant difference found between PC systems, although P200 ERP significantly wider larger as to system.
